Financial Support for Renewable Energy Installations in Greater Manchester.

At Solarus, we’re passionate about helping homeowners in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and beyond transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems. Whether it’s renewable energy installations, heat pumps, EV charging points, or comprehensive mechanical and electrical services, we’re committed to doing our part to support Manchester’s mission of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2038.

But we know one of the biggest hurdles for many households is the upfront cost of making energy-efficient home improvements. The good news? There are several grants, cashback schemes and lender incentives available to help make going green more accessible than ever. In this blog, we’ll explore what funding is out there to help you improve your home, save money on energy bills, and protect the environment.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS): Get Up to £7,500 Towards a Heat Pump

One of the most generous government incentives currently available is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which offers homeowners in England and Wales up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing a heat pump.

Who qualifies for the BUS grant?

You can apply if you:

  • Own the property (homeowners, landlords and small businesses are all eligible)
  • Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding insulation recommendations
  • Are replacing a fossil fuel system (oil, gas or electric) – not upgrading from an existing heat pump
  • Are installing an air source or ground source heat pump

The scheme is open until 2028, and the application is made by the installer – like us here at Solarus – on your behalf. So, there’s minimal admin and maximum benefit.

Mortgage Lenders Are Going Green Too – And Offering Cashback

What many people don’t realise is that their mortgage lender could also help them go green. Several UK lenders now offer green mortgage incentives and cashback schemes for making eco-friendly home improvements.

Halifax Green Living Reward

One standout example is Halifax’s Green Living Reward. If you have a Halifax mortgage, product transfer or further advance, and a Halifax current account, you could qualify for up to £2,000 cashback when you make eligible green upgrades to your home.

Cashback available includes:

  • £2,000 for installing an air source or ground source heat pump
  • £1,000 for solar panels or a solar battery
  • £500 for insulation, double glazing, or other energy-saving upgrades

Plus, once your cashback has been approved, Halifax will also offer you a free Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which gives insight into your home’s energy efficiency and advice for further improvements.

To qualify, you must:

  • Have a Halifax mortgage and a current account
  • Complete the improvement within 12 months of taking out or switching your mortgage
  • Submit an invoice through Halifax’s Green Living portal

Not Switching Mortgage Yet? Still Worth Asking Your Lender

Even if now isn’t the right time to switch your mortgage, it’s still worth checking with your existing lender to see if they offer any green incentives. Some lenders provide preferential rates for eco-conscious upgrades, or discounted valuations for properties with high EPC ratings.

Other lenders with green offerings include:

  • Barclays: Offers a Green Home Mortgage for A or B EPC-rated properties
  • Nationwide: Offers green further advances at lower interest rates for energy-efficient improvements
  • NatWest: Provides lower interest rates for homes with a good EPC, or green additional borrowing for retrofitting
  • Santander: Offers £1000 cashback to make energy efficient home improvements using one of their trusted partners.

If you’re thinking of improving your home’s energy performance, don’t hesitate to speak with your mortgage advisor or broker – there could be financial rewards you’re unaware of.

Why These Incentives Matter

Schemes like the BUS grant and the Halifax Green Living Reward do more than just reduce upfront costs. They also:

  • Make it easier for homeowners to access low-carbon technologies
  • Help reduce energy bills over time
  • Increase property value
  • Contribute to Greater Manchester’s Zero-Carbon 2038 targets
  • Create a more sustainable future for the next generation
